You\u2019re exhausted. Your team is stressed and overworked. In an effort to motivate them, you smile and shout positive sounding things like:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCome on, team. We need to shake things up!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Adapt or die!&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChange is the only constant.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But instead of motivating them, you could be making things toxic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is toxic positivity?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could be displaying toxic positivity by:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>refusing to recognise that you and your team are feeling down<\/li><li>using positive phrases to paper over the negativity<\/li><li>putting pressure on people to hide their negative feelings and emotions<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to do instead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quicker and more effective approach would be to face the negativity by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>creating time for reflection in meetings<\/li><li>allowing space for people to express their feelings, even the negative ones<\/li><li>leading by example and saying what you really feel e.g.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m exhausted. \u2019m sensing a lot of stress in the room. How are you feeling?\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates a more honest and authentic type of communication, helps clear the air, and allows you and your team to eventually focus on the change you want to deliver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine you\u2019re leading a change management project.
